A lot of our shoppers have this question. So to make things simpler and more transparent, we’ve introduced a new price breakdown which all shoppers get to see when purchasing items on Backpack. This way, you can clearly see where your money is going.
The total price you pay is broken down into three parts - seller takes, traveler takes and Backpack takes. Here’s what each part means:
- “Seller takes” is the total amount that we pay the seller. This includes the item price, sales tax and shipping charge. To calculate the amount for “seller takes,” you simply multiply the item price with our flat exchange rate of BDT 84.5 and add 9% (of the item price) as sales tax and the shipping charge for the item, if there is any.
The following image is an example breakdown of what a seller takes:
Here, you can see that the total amount is an addition of the item price, the shipping charge and the sales tax. This total amount is what we pay the seller.
- “Traveler takes” is the money that goes to the traveler for packing, carrying, and safely delivering the item. The bigger or heavier the item, the more the traveler takes.
In order to bring an item from the US, we need to pay the traveler to rent their luggage space. Once the item reaches the traveler’s address, they carefully pack the item, then carry it over safely and hand it over to us in Bangladesh.
Since the traveler has to carry the item in his/her luggage and we need to pay them a carrying charge. If your item takes more space or weight, then the amount the traveler takes increases.
- “Backpack takes” is the actual amount we get to keep. This amount helps us run our platform and offer services like call support, warranty, insurance for damaged/missing items etc.
For certain items where the traveler fee is too high, the Backpack fee can be as low as $0. We’re literally bringing these items for free!
As our pricing model stands, the Backpack fee we take is up to 20% of the item price. Why? Because this amount goes entirely into our efforts to establish a premium service with round the clock support and a 30-day return policy. We also provide insurance for missing/damaged items if the traveler somehow damages or loses the item. We basically need to take the Backpack fee so that we can run our operation without any hiccups.
When you add these 3 parts together, the amount you get is the total amount you are charged for an item.
